Trip on a tank- Chincoteague Island to see the wild pony swim on the last Wednesday of July!!

Chincoteague Island, Virginia/Assateague Island, Maryland - Every year, since the 1700’s, there has been a “round-up” of Chincoteague ponies (a breed rumored to be descendents of Spanish horses). The wild ponies (they’re smaller than horses) live on Assateague Island. On the last Wednesday of July they are led by cowboys through the rough waters to Chincoteague Island. There, they will be sold at auction. This is a way to further the breed and also control the population on the small island– they are not killed or slaughtered. There is a huge festival to celebrate the herd’s safe journey (along with a Fireman’s Festival). The money raised from the pony auction is the Chincoteague Fire Department’s only source of revenue. It is an awesome sight to see hundreds of wild ponies swimming in open water– a once in a lifetime type of thing (unless you live there)!
